A 2019 study published in The Journal of Neuroscience set out to answer this directly. Researchers used fMRI to track brain activity while participants experienced the same stories in two formats: listening and reading. By precisely matching timing and analyzing brain responses at a fine-grained level, they were able to compare how meaning is encoded across both modalities.

To test this further, researchers built predictive models. When a model was trained on brain activity from listening, it could accurately predict brain activity during reading, and vice versa. Practical Applications for Brain Health and Learning
The implication is clear: the format you choose does not determine how well your brain understands information. What matters is how you engage with it.
Reading provides more control. You can pause, re-read, and reflect. This allows for deeper processing when used intentionally. Listening offers continuity. It can maintain flow and reduce friction, making it easier to consume large amounts of information consistently.
But neither is inherently superior at the level of comprehension. The difference emerges from behavior, not biology. If attention is low, both formats fail. If engagement is high, both succeed. The brain extracts meaning. Retention depends on what you do with it.
